The Empty Old Trafford hashtag enlivens social media

DBasia.news – The patience of Manchester United fans with the Glazer Family, as owners, has almost exceeded the limit. Especially after the 1-2 defeat in the 2022-2023 Premier League opener against Birghton & Hove Albion at Old Trafford.

The frustration of the fans that has been pent up since the last few seasons has reached its peak at this time. A plan to stage a major protest has already spread on social media, especially Twitter.

The hashtag “Empty Old Trafford” became a trending topic on Twitter. Fans enlivened it for the match which took place on August 22 against Liverpool. The move was made by AC Milan fans in 2015 and at the San Siro, which had a capacity of 80,000 was almost completely empty and only a handful of fans came.

A form of fan protest that Man United are doing to the Glazers. In the case of Milan at the time, fans were disappointed after Silvio Berlusconi’s daughter, Marina stopped providing financial support to the club in 2010 and after that the team suffered a major downturn.

Players like Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Thiago Silva were sold, Milan signed low-priced and near-ending players like Michael Essien and Sulley Muntari. Not only Milan, Valencia have also done it.

Taking advantage of the momentum, former Man United director Michael Knighton confirmed the Glazer’s time at the club was over and his consortium was ready to purchase a large stake in Man United.

“We are a club in crisis and we all know why,” Knighton told Man Utd’s The Religion.

“We have incompetent and frankly useless possession who knows very little about this game of football. Everyone knows that we need new ownership of this football club and that is my goal and that is my target.”

“I’m making good progress, keep talking to people, I have some good appointments and good finances. We are currently working on the offer document. Remember, this is a hostile offer, it means that the club is not officially up for sale.”

“But my intention is to give this owner a legitimate, strong and commercial offer to say, ‘You’ve run out of roads, it’s time to go, because your time is up’.”

“And to be honest, fans around the world are fed up with this regime. The exciting feeling of the new season, which we all have, and the balloon of joy that was there, all exploded when we quickly saw the performance against Brighton. The club is in crisis and will remain in crisis while we have the current holdings.”

The Glazer family became the target of fans’ anger as they were considered no longer concerned with achievements for Man United, instead making profits. It can be seen with the structure that has not been formed neatly within Man United.
