The Reaction of the Top European Footballers Regarding the Fire of Notre Dame Cathedral

DBasia.news –  The historic building of France, Notre Dame Cathedral, caught fire on Tuesday (4/16) early morning Western Indonesian Time. The fire burned several parts of the building, including circular glass and the roof of the building.

Not yet known exactly what caused it, allegedly a fire occurred because of an ongoing renovation project. The news was heard throughout the world, Europe, and of course French people.  They were shocked by the news.

Understandably, Notre Dame is not just an ordinary building, but a legacy of history which is a silent witness to world conflicts. Notre Dame survived World War I and II and in 1944, when France was freed from German occupation, bells in the church rang and the people welcomed them with joy.

The building is said to have been formed in 1160 in the era of Bishop Maurice de Sully’s leadership. Through a long process of development – up to 200 years – and past the historic moment of the French Revolution, Notre Dame continued to stand firm even though the objects and statues in it had been damaged by the masses.

Notre Dame was also used for Napoleon’s inauguration as the Emperor of France and became the inspiration for Victor Hugo’s writing “The Hunchback of Notre-Dame” which was later appointed as a cartoon in 1996.

So many stories from the building that became the pride of the French people, so naturally, when they heard the fire news, some footballers, French or who were working in France, also gave their comments on social media.

Zinedine Zidane, the icon of French football who now coaches Real Madrid, is also sad to hear the news. Zidane said at a press conference after a 1-1 draw against Leganes in LaLiga.

“Regarding Paris, what I want to tell you … as usual, when things like this happen, all over the world, today in Paris is very complicated and I don’t want these things to happen to anyone,” said  Zidane, quoted from Goal.

“We got the news while warming up, I hope there are no victims in it and that’s all.”

Grief was also expressed by Kylian Mbappe, Neymar, Bafetimbi Gomis, Didier Drogba, Alexandre Lacazette, and Roberto Mancini on their Twitter and Instagram accounts.

The French president, Emmanuel Macron, said the worst possibility had been avoided and he also said that there would be an international fundraiser to rebuild Notre Dame.

“Notre dame is our history, our literature, depictions of our country. That’s the historic place of many of the greatest moments, from war to pandemic to liberation. Our history and now it’s on fire. Burned and I know the sadness that so many French people feel,” said Macron.
