The Reason Joe Gomez Is Still at Liverpool
By db-admin
DBasia.news – Finally, Joe Gomez has chosen to stay and has signed a new contract until 2027. Rumors of Gomez’s departure, which was linked to Aston Villa and Real Madrid, ended.
It is not easy for Gomez to make a decision to sign a new contract as he is not Jurgen Klopp’s first choice at the heart of Liverpool’s defense. At centre-back there are Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Ibrahima Konate.
Gomez was even shifted to the right-back position to layer Trent Alexander-Arnold. Last season alone, apart from injury, Gomez made just 21 appearances in all competitions for 1,036 minutes.
But the 25-year-old player didn’t give up easily. Gomez, who has been at Liverpool since 2015, was recruited by Brendan Rodgers from Charlton Athletic, eager to face the challenge at Liverpool to fight for a place in the first team.
“I can’t deny I heard about these rumours, but until it’s concrete with my representatives, I take everything with a pinch of salt (ignoring it),” Gomez stated as quoted by Goal.
“Any interest is flattering, but I don’t really see it as a nuisance because until I make a decision, external opinions are just, external.”
“Once I thought about what I wanted to do, my (new contract) signing was that I understood the challenge and wanted to bounce back.”
Gomez is aware that it is not easy to compete at Liverpool if you look at the experience of last season, plus it is easier to play at another club, but that is the challenge he is looking for.
“I can understand why people think I would consider a move, for sure, 100%.”
“Judging by my age now and based on my past opportunities, there are definitely decisions I still have to make.”
“I think you can see it as a crossroads, but speaking to the club, I know it’s an important decision I have to make.
“Basically, the opportunity I have here and the place and opportunity to be at this club is one that is difficult to leave. Basically, I accepted the fact that I had to accept the challenge.”
