Thibaut Courtois and The Curse in the last 16 of the Champions League

Thibaut Courtois

DBasia.news –  Real Madrid failed to take advantage of a 2-1 aggregate goal from the first leg of the Champions League last 16, at home to Ajax Amsterdam at the Santiago Bernabeu, on the second leg on Wednesday (6/3) early morning Western Indonesian Time. El Real lost 1-4 at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Ahead of this season, Real Madrid decided to bring in a new goalkeeper. Chosen Thibaut Courtois, the Belgian goalkeeper they brought from Chelsea. Courtois slowly removed Keylor Navas as the main keeper.

Courtois chose to leave Chelsea in hopes of achieving success in the Champions League. Understandably, Madrid has just become the European champions for the third time in a row. Moreover, since 2014, Courtois has never escaped the last 16.

The record Courtois has in the Champions League is certainly striking compared to Keylor Navas who was part of Madrid’s success. The success that Courtois wanted to feel.

However, far from the roast fire. Courtois’ hopes of going further than the last 16 failed again. Is this a curse?

In the 2014/15 season, Courtois with Chelsea were eliminated in the last 16. The Blues lost at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain. In the following year, Paris Saint-Germain again became a booster for Chelsea and Courtois in the same round.

Whereas last season, it was Barcelona who ended Chelsea’s steps, also at the same stage.

Looking at these records, the last 16 can be said to be a big obstacle Courtois cannot pass. And, Courtois’s poor record continues even though he has changed his costume.
