Three Keys to Success and One Mistake Tuchel When Winning over Atletico
By db-admin
DBasia.news – Chelsea maintains the momentum to play under the direction of Thomas Tuchel. Playing the first leg of the Champions League last 16 at Wanda Metropolitano, Atletico Madrid headquarters, Wednesday (24/02), the Blues won 1-0.
Chelsea dominated possession up to 64 percent with 11 attempted kicks and five on target. Of the five opportunities, Olivier Giroud’s goal in the 68th minute was scored by an overhead kick.
The goal is worth an away goal to take to the second leg played at Stamford Bridge next March. The result adds to Tuchel’s neat record since coming to replace Frank Lampard in January 2021.
Tuchel has won six and drawn two of his eight games leading Chelsea. Chelsea’s defense improved with just two goals conceded. It is the second best record after Jose Mourinho, who conceded one goal in the first eight games.
Tuchel (47 years) revealed the key to the success of his team’s victory. According to him, Chelsea did not provide any room for Atletico to develop their game (as evidenced by their zero kicking on target). Plus Chelsea is not afraid to play offensively at Atletico headquarters.
“Fantastic results, extraordinary goals. Very deserved. We want to dominate in the opponent’s midfield, never lose concentration, don’t make easy mistakes and are always on the lookout for quick counter-attacks for all their qualities,” Tuchel told BT Sport.
“It was a very disciplined performance – a fitting finish. It was hard work, a team effort – the basis for a big win.”
“We know that (Atletico builds up players in defense) can happen. We tell the players if that happens maybe it’s our quality and respect. We want to be brave and play in their part (defense).”
“We know they are ready to suffer with eight people in the box. The aim is to keep the intensity high. This is what we do very well.”
“We never let them breathe or come out to counterattack. We got a big reward with this result. This is one of the toughest challenges to open a defense like Atletico,” explained Tuchel.
The victory will be a positive asset for Tuchel and Chelsea before playing in Week 26 of the Premier League against Manchester United at Stamford Bridge, Sunday (28/02).
