Tuchel finally experienced Mason Mount’s ‘death stare’
By db-admin
DBasia.news – Chelsea attacking midfielder, Mason Mount is a player with great prospects to become the best in his position with the talent he has. He is only 23 years old and Mount has already won the Champions League title.
In the era of Frank Lampard or Thomas Tuchel, Mount was a mainstay in Chelsea’s attack with a goal-scoring instinct when he fired long-range shots. It’s hard for any coach to back him up.
No doubt Tuchel’s decision to reserve Mount when Chelsea lost 0-1 to Manchester City invites questions. Mount only started playing towards the end of the game and Tuchel played more with Christian Pulisic and Hakim Ziyech.
Reportedly, the famous ‘death stare’ Mount gave to a manager or coach when he didn’t play was shown to Tuchel. Lampard had seen that before.
“I remember every time I didn’t play Mason, and people would say it wasn’t much, but his eyes ‘burned you’ in the boardroom once I didn’t pick him and it was a 20 year old kid,” said Lampard.
“I like it because it reminds me of myself.”
That’s the look Tuchel felt when he only played Mount in the 81st minute against City. “Yes, I get that stare and it’s completely normal,” added Tuchel as quoted by the Mirror.
“But it’s still in Mason’s character of kindness by being friendly and respectful, so there’s no problem with that.”
“I get that look in those eyes. I know that look, of course. He (Mount) is here to play games like that, but we simply lack runners.”
It was the lack of runners that made Tuchel use Ziyech and Pulisic from the start instead of Mount.
“We thought we could have broken the line more often with Hakim being left footed on the left and chasing Christian on the right because of Christian’s arrival in the box,” added Mount.
“Usually, he’s a bit more offensive, a bit more like a runner than Mason and we expected more space behind the last line and not in front of the back four from City, so that’s the decision.”
“I don’t think Mason is in the 100% zone where he’s kind of untouchable, which he usually almost does. So we took that decision and it can happen from time to time.”
“He wasn’t happy about it, but it wouldn’t last long because everyone loves Mason, including me,” he explained.
