DBasia.news – Real Madrid will meet Atletico Madrid in the quarter-finals of the Copa del Rey this season. Even though the Madrid Derby has been around for some time, there are some interesting facts that no one knows about.
Madrid and Atletico will go head to head in the quarter-finals of the Copa del Rey this season. Before the match, the tension was already heating up regarding Real Madrid’s actions which limited the movement of Atletico supporters.
Reportedly, Madrid only gave a small quota for Atletico supporters. In addition, Los Rojiblancos supporters are also prohibited from wearing the Atletico jersey when visiting.
Madrid, who heard the news, issued a statement. Los Merengues denied the issues.
Even though it is in the spotlight, the Madrid Derby duel has a number of interesting facts that are rarely known. Here are five facts from the Madrid derby that you might not know:
Atletico Born from the Desire to Rival Real Madrid
A group of students from Basque living in Madrid attended the first Copa del Rey final in 1903, which brought together Athletic Club and Madrid CF, the team that would later become Real Madrid.
These students did not like the way Madrid CF played. Eighteen days later, they formed the Athletic branch in the city of Madrid which later became Atletico de Madrid.
Atletico Unvictorious For 14 Years
Between 1999 and 2013, Atletico Madrid suffered every derby match. They have never won in their 25 meetings with Real Madrid, until the arrival of Diego Simeone changed their fortunes.
Since then, the derby has been more even, they won nine of their 31 derby matches, drew 11 and lost 11 (across competitions). Meanwhile, the record in LaLiga is four wins and four defeats in 16 derby matches.
Celebrating Traditions at the Cibeles Fountain
In the 1970s, the tradition of celebrating titles with fellow fans in various corners of the city began to be more apparent in Spain. The Cibeles Fountain, located in the center of Madrid, became the ideal meeting point for fans, and although the location is now synonymous with Real Madrid, it was actually Atletico fans who started their celebrations there first, after they won the LaLiga title in 1977.
Over time, other fans began to follow their tradition, and the venue became the venue for the club’s title celebrations in the city of Madrid throughout the 1980s, Real Madrid fans celebrated the iconic Quinta del Buitre generation there.
By the time Atletico won another title in 1991, namely the Copa del Rey title, Cibeles had become synonymous with Real Madrid, so Atletico fans decided to celebrate near the Neptune fountain, on the Paseo de la Castellana to be precise.
More than El Clasico
Today, Real Madrid’s arch-rival is Barcelona, but the Madrid Derby was once a bigger game in the early decades after the Spanish Civil War ended in 1939.
As the legend of football, Alfredo di Stefano, said: “Forget Barcelona, the team that can make things challenging for us is Atletico.”
Atletico’s sweet record at the Santiago Bernabeu
Real Madrid’s stadium, Santiago Bernabeu, is uniquely a special place for Atletico Madrid fans. Los Colchorenos have won the Copa del Rey 10 times, nine of which have come at their rivals’ stadiums.
Of the 10 titles, only the 1996 title against Barcelona was won in a different location, at Real Zaragoza’s La Romareda Stadium.
