Weird Transfers in the World of Football
By db-admin
DBasia.news – Rumors of player movement become the main dish when the transfer market is opened. Like the issue of Paul Pogba or Neymar’s transfer that never ends.
Throughout history, it is not uncommon for surprises to happen when players decide to leave a club that is completely off the radar. The latest example is Erling Braut Haaland. The Norwegian player was originally predicted to move to Manchester United, but suddenly Haaland was officially announced to belong to Borussia Dortmund.
The decision Haaland took was indeed surprising. But it can still be understood because Dortmund is a big club in the Bundesliga and has a reputation for being a good school for young players. The joining of Haaland to Dortmund is not as strange as the move of several world soccer legends.
Here are five strange transfers of the world soccer legend.
Allan Simonsen
Barcelona to Charlton Athletic
In 1982, Allan Hansen shocked the world of football after deciding to join Charlton Athletic after Barcelona. This decision was very surprising and considered strange considering that Simonsen had just brought Barcelona to win the Winners Cup.
Once the European Footballer of the Year, Simonsen was forced to leave Barcelona. The rules of the two foreign players forced Barcelona to release Simonsen following the arrival of Diego Maradona. Barcelona chose to pair Maradona with German striker Bernd Schuster.
Simonsen is actually in demand by Real Madrid. But he prefers to join Charlton who gives a bigger offer. At that time Charlton desperately needed the presence of stars to attract spectators to the stadium. Simonsen scored nine goals in 16 appearances before activating the option to leave the club. Charlton himself later experienced a financial crisis because spending Simonsen’s salary was greater than their income.
Zico
Flamengo to Udinese
Who is the best player in the world, Maradona or Zico? The question arises before the 1982 World Cup mat. At that time Maradona had just decided to move to Europe to join Barcelona. Meanwhile, Zico still has a one-year contract with Flamengo.
A year later the football world was shocked after Udinese announced they had managed to get the “White Pele”. Zico who actually prefers to stay in Flamengo. He said he would survive if Flamengo wanted to match the contract offered by Udinese. But Flamengo refused and finally, Zico left.
Zico’s move was considered abnormal because Udinese was considered to have no money to fulfill Zico’s contract. That’s why the Italian authorities decided to block Zico’s move to Udinese. That decision led to chaos in the City of Udine. Udinese supporters decided to take to the streets to protest. As a result, the decision was revoked and Zico officially joined.
In his inaugural season in Serie A, Zico scored 19 goals, losing only one to Michel Platini who was the top scorer.
Gary Lineker
Tottenham to Nagoya Grampus Eight
In the 1991-92 season, England captain Gary Lineker was still at his best. He was able to score a total of 35 goals for Tottenham Hotspur. He was also chosen as the best choice of journalists.
Lineker is even predicted to be able to break the national team record in the European Cup which was then held by Bobby Charlton. But in the inaugural Premier League season, Lineker chose to leave Tottenham. What is surprising and strange is the Japanese club Nagoya Grampus Eight chosen by Lineker.
In Japan, Lineker was more absent because of injury. Lineker then decided to hang up his shoes in 1994. “The problem at that time was that I was always injured,” said Lineker, recalling his work in Japan.
Jurgen Klinsmann
Monaco to Tottenham
Jurgen Klinsmann’s move to Tottenham Hotspur in 1994 is somewhat strange. Because in the 1993-94 season, Spurs performed very poorly, almost relegated. They survived only by a difference of three points from the red zone.
Not only that, entering the new season, Tottenham had to start with a minus of 12 points and prohibited to appear in the cup because of financial problems. After the appeal sentence was cut in half.
Spurs owner Alan Sugar then flew to Monaco and persuaded Klinsmann to join without consultation with Osvaldo Ardiles, Spurs’ manager. Klinsmann finally accepted Sugar’s offer verbally.
Sugar’s efforts were sweet, with Spurs Klinsmann able to make 29 goals in his first season and were chosen as the best player. Klinsmann then left for Bayern Munich the following season and had returned in the middle of the 1997-98 season as a loan from Sampdoria.
Claudio Caniggia
Atalanta to Dundee
Claudio Caniggia’s name was shot up after performing brilliantly with Argentina at the 1990 World Cup. Caniggia became an important figure who led Argentina to qualify for the finals, although eventually defeated by Germany.
In 1992 Cannigia moved to AS Roma. But in this Italian capital Caniggia failed to pass a doping test and had to undergo a 13-month suspension. After returning to Boca Juniors after his sentence, Caniggia returned to Italy and joined Atalanta. Failing to contribute, Caniggia chose to hang shoes. But in May 2000, Ivano Bonetti, who was Caniggia’s best friend, was appointed manager of the Scottish club Dundee United. Caniggia came out of retirement and joined his best friend. With Dundee, Caniggia scored eight goals in 25 appearances.
