When Benfica Felt the Power of Bayern Munich

By db-admin

DBasia.news – Bayern Munich’s status as the favorite to win the Champions League 2021-2022 is unquestionable. Benfica has just felt the enormity of the German giant’s power.

Benfica have the ambition to steal points when they host Munich in the third match of Group E at the Estadio da Luz, Thursday (21/10). Victory over Barcelona in the previous match became their capital to do so.

But Munich is in fact on a different level to Barcelona. Robert Lewandowski and his friends were able to lock up Benfica’s defense for most of the match.

Benfica is not without a fight. Two counter-attacks the hosts almost scored a goal if Manuel Neuer did not make a brilliant save.

Munich’s attempts to break the deadlock twice through Lewandowski and Thomas Muller were canceled out by VAR. This had strengthened the belief of the Benfica squad to at least steal one point.

That hope looks like it will come true until the normal time remaining 20 minutes. But Leroy Sane’s free-kick in the 70th minute broke the spirits of the Benfica players.

Evidently, three additional goals can be created Munich with relative ease. Everton Soares’ suicide, Sane’s second goal and Lewandowski’s touch saw Die Roten close the game with a 4-0 win.

Munich’s dominance is clearly visible in the statistical data. The possession of the ball reached 66 percent and 21 shots already described their strength.

Benfica coach did not hesitate to admit the superiority of Munich. However, he assessed that the results could be different if his foster children were more effective in taking advantage of opportunities.

“I think they will score a maximum of two goals, and we should have scored one or two. But I have to give credit to the Bayern team,” Benfica coach Jorge Jesus told TVI24.

“Their substitute managed to change the game.”

Remarkably, Munich’s solid appearance was carried out without being accompanied by a head coach. Julian Nagelsmann was forced to miss due to illness.

This result makes Munich even more firmly at the top of Group E. Meanwhile, Benfica seems to have to kill each other with Barcelona to win one remaining ticket to the knockout phase.
