Without Messi, Ronald Koeman’s minimum target check to stay at Barcelona

Barcelona’s preparation for the new season did not go smoothly. Questions over the future of Lionel Messi and a number of other stars has distracted Koeman.

Barcelona is planning to sell some of its stars to lower the salary burden. This is necessary in order to extend Messi’s contract.

But a week before the competition started, Barcelona finally gave up. The Blaugrana have confirmed Messi’s departure on a free transfer.

Barcelona’s strategy in the transfer market has changed. Luckily, El Barca had already secured the services of Memphis Depay, Eric Garcia, Sergio Aguero for free.

Barcelona then made a surprise at the transfer deadline. They loaned Antoine Griezmann to Atletico Madrid and signed Luuk de Jong instead.

These turmoils has made Barcelona’s readiness to compete in the title race doubted. But this does not make Koeman have remission.

Reporting from Diario AS, Barcelona asked Koeman to present the LaLiga title. It is a mandatory condition for getting a contract extension.

The bond of cooperation between Barcelona and Koeman will indeed end in the summer of next year. This is certainly not an easy task to accomplish.

Barcelona last won the La Liga title in the 2018-2019 season. At that time Ernesto Valverde was still in the coaching position.

After Valverde was dismissed in January 2020, Barcelona’s performance has began to decline drastically. They also lost to compete with the Madrid duo in the last two seasons.
