DBasia.news – Russia’s military invasion of Ukrainian territory has stolen the world’s attention over the past week. But this conflict caused its own trauma for Manchester City star, Oleksandr Zinchenko.
Zinchenko did feel the direct impact of the conflict between the two countries. That’s because he comes from Ukraine.
Zinchenko cannot forget the moment he first learned his country was under attack. The 25-year-old player’s family is still living in Ukraine.
“In the middle of the night UK time, my wife woke me up and she was crying. I was shocked after she showed me videos, pictures, of what was going on in Ukraine,” Zinchenko told the BBC.
“This feeling is like when you feel really bad and it’s even worse. Imagine the place where you were born and grew up turning into just empty land.”
This incident has mentally shaken Zinchenko. He has only made one appearance for Manchester City since then.
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola did give Zinchenko the opportunity to step back. Football is not the main thing in a moment like this.
Interestingly, Zinchenko had considered joining the war. However, he refused to do so.
“If it weren’t for my children and family, I would be there (the battlefield). I was born that way and I know the mentality of the people of my country,” he added.
“They are ready to die fighting for their lives and will not give up. I am very proud to be Ukrainian.”
Zinchenko did bury his intention to go to war. But he can still contribute through football to support his country.
As is known, various campaigns to stop war are routinely carried out before matches in various countries. England became one of the active nation to do this.
Zinchenko also had the honor of wearing the armband when Manchester City defeated Peterborough in the FA Cup. He was touched by the support from many parties for Ukraine.
“I am very grateful to everyone for the support I have here. It’s like they are encouraging us (Ukraine) not to give up,” he concluded.
