1.2 Billion Euros Funds Disbursement Has Not Been Able to Bring PSG to Conquer Europe

DBasia.news – Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) again has to fast for titles in the Champions League. The Ligue 1 champions fell from Bayern Munich in the final match which was held at the Estadio da Luz, Monday (24/8).

Bayern dominated the match from the start of the match and PSG relied on counter-attacks through the speed of play that Angel Di Maria, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe had. It can be seen from Bayern’s possession statistics of 62 to 38 percent of PSG.

PSG’s awkwardness in a big and crucial phase like the final match was seen because after Bayern winning they had difficulty creating opportunities. No doubt, until the game ends, Hans-Dieter Flick’s Bayern control the rhythm of playing wisely against Thomas Tuchel’s team.

PSG failed to win the Champions League again, which has been the club’s ambition since Nasser Al-Khelaifi arrived in 2011. It is no secret that the Qatar wealthy businessman has the ambition to make PSG the European champion.

PSG have become a force that is difficult to shift from the throne of Ligue 1 and dominate the titles in France. However, when it comes to European competition, Les Parisiens always have a hard time winning them, even now when they reached the final for the first time.

According to Marca’s record, the owner of PSG has invested as much as 1.2 billion euros or approximately Rp20 trillion to strengthen the team since 2011. This amount of money was bought by PSG to recruit Europe’s top stars.

In the 2011-12 season PSG spent 107.1 million euros on new players including Javier Pastore (42 million euros). Then in the following season for 151 million euros to sign Thiago Silva (42 million euros), Lucas Moura (40 million euros), Ezequiel Lavezzi (30 million euros), and Zlatan Ibrahimovic (21 million euros). Plus borrowed David Beckham.

In the summer of 2013 the club owner spent 135.9 million euros to sign Edinson Cavani, Marquinhos and Yohan Cabaye before buying David Luiz for 49.5 million euros that year.

Then in the 2015-16 season, 116.1 million euros were used up and in the 2016-17 season, a total of 134.5 million euros was spent. It was only in 2017 that PSG spent all the money by recruiting Neymar for 222 million euros and recruiting Kylian Mbappe for 145 million euros the following year.

In the summer of 2019 PSG spent 95 million euros on signing Keylor Navas and Pablo Sarabia. A total of 1.2 billion euros has been out of the club owner’s money and PSG are still struggling to win the Champions League title. The term success that money cannot ‘buy’ has become a reality.

“I think it is a failure that they (PSG) did not win it (the Champions League) in the previous two seasons because for five or six years the investment was crazy, the list of top players who were there was incredible,” said Jose Mourinho some time ago.

“For how many seasons Thiago Silva was there, Marquinhos was there, and then all the big players, Ibra, Cavani, Neymar, Mbappe.”
