Chelsea Breaks Manchester United’s Record in the Champions League
By db-admin
DBasia.news – Chelsea became the first English club to set foot in the 2020-2021 Champions League semifinals. That success also made the Blues break a record belonging to Manchester United.
Chelsea were defeated 0-1 by FC Porto in the second leg of the quarter-finals at Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan, Wednesday (14/4) am, WIB. Even so, this result did not hinder their move to the semifinals.
Mehdi Taremi’s spectacular goal during injury time became the differentiator between the two teams in this match. However, Chelsea continued to advance, winning 2-1 on aggregate thanks to a two-goal win without reply in the first meeting.
Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel acknowledged this success was achieved through hard struggle. He also did not forget to praise FC Porto for providing fierce resistance in two meetings.
“It was a difficult fight but we got what was needed. Overall, we deserved to beat Porto in 180 minutes,” Tuchel told BT Sport.
“Porto is a team that can make other teams perform badly, that happened in the group stage and against Juventus.”
Surpassing Manchester United’s record
This is the eighth time Chelsea have reached the semifinals during their participation in the modern-era Champions League. This amount has made them the British team to appear most in the top four of Europe’s elite club competition.
Chelsea surpassed Manchester United’s record, that has appeared in the semifinals of the Champions League. Meanwhile, Liverpool, who became the most successful English club in this event, only set foot in the top four for five times.
Tuchel’s Chelsea will certainly try to improve this minor record. They will face either Liverpool or Real Madrid in the semifinals later.
