Ex-Manchester City Player Raised His Eyebrows about Jones’s Long-Term Contract at United

Phil Jones

DBasia.news –  Manchester United contracts one of the team’s senior pillars, Phil Jones, with a four-year contract duration (up to 2023).That means Jones will be 30 years old when his contract expires later.

Regarding this, the former England national team defender Stuart Pearce said the Red Devils had made a mistake by extending the four-year contract for Jones. For Pearce, it would be wise if the club only offered short-term contracts.

What Pearce said was not without strong reasons. Because, Jones is known as an injury-prone player.

“This season Jones only played 11 times out of 25 Premier League matches. Last season, 23 out of 38. The previous season, 18 out of 38,” said Pearce quoted from talksSport.

“For me, it is more appropriate for him to extend his contract by two years, no more.”

The previous Phil Jones contract will expire in the summer of 2019. In the extension of the contract there is also an option to add another one-year contract.

Despite frequent injuries, Man United’s interim coach, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insists that Jones is a suitable player for his team.

“Phil Jones knows what is needed to become a Manchester United player. “He has won the Premier League, FA Cup and Europa League and now he is a senior player in the team,” said Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on the club’s official website.

Jones joined Man United from Blackburn Rovers at the age of 19 in 2011. Jones is the third player to have signed a new contract since Solskjaer replaced Jose Mourinho. Previously United had extended Scott McTominay and Anthony Martial’s contracts.
