DBasia.news – Qatar’s preparation as the host of 2022 World Cup kept on criticized, especially the human rights issue violation. Recently, the news was surprising.
According to the report from Amnesty International, there are dozens of workers involved in the stadium establishment for the great event and haven’t get paid for 10 months.
They are the worker contracted by Mercury MENA, a company dealing with some projects for the 2022 World Cup, including the building of Lusail Stadium for the opening and closing match.
In the report called “Unpaid and abandoned: the abuse of Mercury MENA workers”, Amnesty International mentioned that the company hasn’t paid the salary of the workers ranging from $1,370-2,470 (Rp20,4 to 36,8 billion). Moreover, there is a worker who hasn’t paid for a decade with the salary exceeding $25,000 (Rp373 million).
“People from all over the world cheering, laughing, touring some of the beautiful stadiums, recreational sites and hotels here… Will they ever think what are the stories behind those structures? I guess not… Blind eyes are common nowadays,” one worker reportedly told Amnesty International.
Some workers of Mercury MENA came from developing countries in Asia like Nepal, India, and Phillippines. For the workers and their family, the salary is very high considering their low cost in their countries, less than $2 or around Rp30,000 every day for each person.
