On Sunday (20/11) the 2022 World Cup was officially opened. The opening ceremony starts at 2pm GMT (9am ET) and if converted to WIB, the opening will take place at 21.00 WIB in the evening.

Two hours later, the match between Qatar and Ecuador started. The opening ceremony was originally scheduled to take place on November 21, but was brought forward to coincide with the opening game. This is to maintain the tradition of the first match featuring the host or defending champion.

Venue

The 2022 World Cup opening ceremony will be held at the 60,000 capacity Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor. The stadium was specially built for the World Cup and will open in November 2021. Al Bayt will host six matches in the group stage, as well as the last 16 and semi-final matches.

Entertainment at the Opening

No one knows for sure what surprise Qatar has prepared as the host, but what is certain is that Jungkook BTS will be on the opening stage. It was confirmed on November 12 from BTS’s official Twitter account.

“Proud to announce that Jung Kook is part of the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup Soundtrack and will be performing at the opening ceremony of the World Cup. Stay tuned!” said Jungkook’s official Twitter.

Apart from Jungkook’s presence, other performers for the the opening is still unknown. At the 2018 World Cup in Russia the Brazilian football legend, Ronaldo, along with official mascot Zabikava and child mascot took the first kick as a ceremony to start the tournament.

It was followed by speeches from Russian President, Vladimir Putin and FIFA President, Gianni Infantino. Robbie Williams was also on stage and entertaining the crowd.
