DBasia.news – Atletico Madrid finally inaugurated the transfer of Benfica’s young talent, Joao Felix, by redeeming the purchase clause of 126 million euros. Felix is now one of the world’s most expensive players.
Remarkably, the Portuguese striker is only 19 years old and last season had his full season at Benfica’s main team. Atletico redeemed his purchase clause and Benfica could not flinch. Los Colchoneros has contracted him for seven years.
“Atletico de Madrid and Benfica have reached an agreement regarding the transfer of Joao Felix. The 19-year-old player has signed a contract for the next seven seasons,” wrote a statement on the club’s official website.
Atletico clearly believed in Felix’s talent as they were willing to invest heavily in him. Felix will be the direct replacement for Antoine Griezmann who is getting closer to joining Barcelona.
Griezmann, even though he has yet to formally join any club, has previously expressed his decision to leave Atletico. Griezmann followed Lucas Hernandez, Diego Godin, Juanfran, Filipe Luis, and Rodri, as part of the exodus of Atletico players.
Atletico under Diego Simeone’s direction moved vastly in replacing the players who had left. Felipe, Hector Herrera, and Felix, are three new players who play as defenders, midfielders and attackers.
Among the three, Felix’s name clearly received the most attention. According to news from BBC Sport and CNN International, Felix is in the top five of the world’s most expensive transfer lists, yes, the world’s most expensive, not Europe.
In a matter of pounds, Felix was in third place (113 million pounds), under Neymar (198 million pounds), Kylian Mbappe (166 million pounds), then above Philippe Coutinho (114 million pounds) and Ousmane Dembele (94 million pounds) .
Felix also became the world’s second most expensive young player after Mbappe, who transferred from Monaco to PSG for 166 million pounds.
Felix’s career has grown rapidly since being promoted to Benfica’s main team last year. Last season, Felix scored 15 goals and became the first young man in history to score a hat trick in the Europa League.
Felix also contributed to the Primeira Liga title for Benfica. Felix’s great action was inseparable from Fernando Santos’ observation, Portugal national team coach, who called him into the team squad.
On the national team, Felix trained directly with the Juventus megastar, Cristiano Ronaldo. He made a stamp and was in the Portugal squad which successfully won the inaugural edition of the 2018-19 UEFA Nations League.
