Neither Xavi Nor Busquets, De Jong Plays Like Andres Iniesta

For Ajax talent scout Tonny Bruins Slot, De Jong in Barcelona would be suitable in playing the role like Andres Iniesta instead of Sergio Busquets or Xavi Hernandez.

The media predicted De Jong would be the next Busquets in Barcelona. No wonder, De Jong performed impressively as the midfielder in Ajax, and sometimes as the sweeper.

But, Bruins Slot, Johan Cruyff’s assistant when coaching Barcelona between 1988 and 1995 thinks De Jong has the strategy like an attacking midfielder, like Iniesta or Michael Laudrup.

“He has such a fine technique, he’s a footballer of the very top level,” he told Esports Cope.

“De Jong can play in Busquets’ position, but he doesn’t have the defensive level of Sergio. He has exceptional quality, though. He could play Xavi’s role, too, but he’s more Iniesta.”

Besides giving the compliment, Bruins Slot also revealed what De Jong should improve if he wants to be the prominent player in the new club.

“He needs to improve physically, though. He’s young, only 21, and he has to grow to compete in Spanish football.”

One thing for sure, De Jong is the right player for Barca. That’s why Blaugrana insisted in chasing him with a high transfer fee.

“He doesn’t lose the ball, he has great vision and, I repeat, a great touch,” Bruins Slot explained.
