Nemanja Matic Explains Why He Didn’t Wear the Poppy Flower

As a matter of fact, the British team always use the poppy flower in Remembrance Sunday, the closest Sunday to November 11.

Remembrance Sunday is the day to commemorate the first and second world war victim. The nearest is November 11th, close to the celebration of World War I’s end.

Interestingly, Nemanja Matic didn’t wear the poppy flower when Manchester United won 2-1 against Bournemouth. Shortly, Matic got many critics.

However, apparently, Nemanja Matic has his own argument. The Manchester United midfielder remembered the team when his village got bombed when he was just little.

“I recognize fully why people wear poppies. I totally respect everyone’s right to do so and I have total sympathy for anyone who has lost loved ones due to conflict,” Nemanja Matic wrote in his social media account.

“However, for me, it is a reminder of an attack I felt personally as a young, frightened 12-yo boy living in Vrelo, as my country was devastated by bombing in 1999. Whilst I have done so previously, on reflection I now don’t feel it is right for me to wear the poppy.”

“I hope everyone understands my reasons now that I have explained them and I can concentrate on helping the team in the games that lie ahead,” he concluded.
