Rooney Criticizes Ferguson’s ‘Suicide’ Tactic against Barcelona
By db-admin
DBasia.news – Former striker and captain of Manchester United, Wayne Rooney, criticized the tactics of his ex-coach Sir Alex Ferguson against Barcelona in two Champions League finals.
Manchester United met Barcelona in the 2008-2009 Champions League final and 2010-2011. On these two occasions the Red Devils failed to overcome the Blaugrana. United 0-2 in the 2009 Champions League final at the Stadio Olimpico and 1-3 at Wembley Stadium in the 2011 Champions League final.
As reported by the Manchester Evening News, Rooney assessed the final results would be different if Alex Ferguson adopted a different tactic.
“We lost in the two Champions League finals to Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona, by trying to push high and overcome them. It was a suicide,” Rooney said.
“I remember Alex Ferguson saying ‘we are Man United and we will attack, it is in the culture of this football club.’
The tactic was considered Rooney different when United got rid of Barcelona in the 2007-08 Champions League semifinals.
“I think all the players know, in their hearts, that is the wrong approach, that we abandoned the way that brought us success in the 2008 semifinals, and of course we lost,” Rooney said.
