DBasia.news –  Edwin van der Sar, former Manchester United goalkeeper, has provided input on the work of the Club Sports Director to his former teammate, Rio Ferdinand, who is rumored to be United’s Sports Director.

Ferdinand, 40, spent much of his time as an observer of English football after retiring playing in 2015. He is a tough former Man United defender who strengthened the team from 2002 to 2014 and presented six Premier League titles, two League Cups and one Champions League.

The position of Director of Sport in United’s hierarchy has never existed before because the transfer of players is always managed by Sir Alex Ferguson with his communication with the club and United CEO David Gill. Now, all the work is entirely overcome by United’s Executive Vice-Chairman, Ed Woodward.

Nevertheless, Woodward’s player recruits since Ferguson retired in 2013 were not all good. Moreover, managers also took turns coming from David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, to Jose Mourinho.

The presence of the Director of Sport is expected to ease the work of the current United manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who incidentally is also a former United player. Ferdinand, Solskjaer, and assistant coach, Mike Phelan, are expected to be able to communicate with each other about the criteria players need for the club in the transfer market.

The job is ordinary for Ferdinand. Nevertheless, he admitted that he had discussed with Van der Sar, the former United goalkeeper who is now the Director of Sports at Ajax Amsterdam, regarding things needed, challenges, etc. related to the Director of Sports of the football club.

“He (Van der Sar) is a very kind man. He did a fantastic job there. He told me everything he needed and also the work he did there,” Ferdinand said, quoted from Goal.

“The work is very demanding, but it is very satisfying when you play at a level like this at this stage in the tournament,” continued the man born in Camberwell, November 7, 1978.

Ferdinand has not been fully appointed as United’s Sports Director. He is the strongest candidate among the other candidates such as Van der Sar, Mike Phelan, Paul Mitchell (former Head of Recruitment for Tottenham Hotspur).
