DBasia.news – The change is happening in Arsenal. There is no more Arsene Wenger, who have been coaching The Gunners for 22 years before deciding to exit last season. During his contribution since 1996, Wenger’s contribution was great.
Not only coaching, Wenger also boosted the financial sector of the North London club through the organized transfer management, hence the building of Emirates Stadium replacing Highbury. Wenger’s carefulness and intelligence in handling everything made him called The Professor.
In the technical area, Wenger invented offensive strategy in Arsenal, changing the previous British football when he came from Nagoya Grampus Eight in 1996. He also built the foundation of young players development to be the next star.
All of his contributions will never be forgotten. Wenger is part of Arsenal’s big history and will be remembered as their best manager. But, nothing lasts forever. Arsenal’s slowdown during two past seasons failing to qualify the Champions League asked Wenger to leave his job even though the contract was still on.
Public only knows that Wenger resigned. But that’s not the fact. Jack Wilshere, his former player in Arsenal said that Wenger was fired by the club high-officials. The fire surprised Arsenal’s players. Besides talking about Wenger’s exit, Wilshere also explained his reason for leaving the club he belonged since 2001 (academy level).
I was in the last year of my contract, and I spoke with the manager at the time, Arsene Wenger, and he said that they won’t be offering me a new deal and that I could leave. But at the time I was injured and it was difficult, because I wasn’t fit and I wasn’t playing, and not many teams wanted me injured,” Wilshere told the story.
“So I decided to stay and I got back into the team and they finally offered me a deal in January which was ready to sign, and then Arsene got sacked. It was strange, everyone was just shocked and Per Mertesacker, the captain, said a few words, and I think everyone was just in shock,” he said reported by Express.
“It was strange. No-one really saw it coming, but it changed everything, and I wanted to wait to speak to the new manager. And I did, and he was brilliant, he was honest with me. He said you can stay, but you won’t be in my starting XI, so I thought it was the right time to finally leave.”
Let’s relate the Wilshere’s statements with Wenger’s comment after leaving Arsenal. The France man admitted that he regretted coaching Arsenal for 22 years.
When asked what was the biggest mistake of his career, Wenger said: “Perhaps staying at the same club for 22 years. I’m someone who likes new things, likes change. But I also like challenges. I was a little bit of a prisoner to my challenge each time. I regret having sacrificed everything I did because I realize I’ve hurt a lot of people around me.”
Fired or not, Wenger’s resignation was a great thing for Arsenal to start a new page. The moment is perfect because The Gunners never compete to get the Premier League title, previously achieved in 2004. Also, their strategy was easy to read last season.
