DBasia.news – Spanish football is the fastest to innovate and try to develop it every year. If previously there was the idea of playing a La Liga match abroad, this time the Spanish Super Cup event will change.
The president of the RFEF (Spanish Football Federation), Luis Rubiales, proposed the existence of four teams participating in the Spanish Super Cup and the tournament will be held overseas. That is different from usual.
If usually the Spanish Super Cup only brings together two La Liga and Copa del Rey championship teams, then this time the other two teams will be the Copa del Rey and La Liga runners-up. If the same team wins LaLiga and Copa del Rey, the Spanish Super Cup contestants are taken from the team below.
“We see an opportunity to promote the Spanish brand without tarnishing the principle of sport,” Rubiales said, reported Sky Sports. Rubiales saw this as an opportunity to promote Spanish football throughout the world.
The Spanish Super Cup was supposed to be held outside Spain last year. The match between Barcelona and Sevilla which ended 2-1 for Barca’s victory was held in Tangier, Morocco. Plus, the fight doesn’t use the two-leg system as usual.
The format is still being reviewed because Rubiales is still awaiting approval from all members at the RFEF meeting next April. On that occasion also, Rubiales alluded to Javier Tebas, President of La Liga, who insisted on playing one La Liga match abroad.
Girona’s match against Barcelona which recently took place was supposed to be played in Miami, United States. But because it was opposed by many parties, including from Barcelona, the game failed to be played in Miami.
“FIFA is very clear about fighting in Miami. If they change their criteria then we will do what they say, but we still believe you tarnish the essence of sports if you prevent a team from playing at home because of financial motives,” Rubiales added.
