Premier League Clubs Are Getting Closer to Financial Crisis

By db-admin

DBasia.news –  Operators of Europe’s top leagues are really stressed at the moment amid the corona virus pandemic which has to postpone the 2019-20 season competition. One of the postponed leagues is the Premier League.

UK has 19,000 more cases of the corona virus with a death toll of 1,228 and recovering 135. England has not yet done a lockdown despite two figures, Prince Charles and Boris Johnson, tested positive of Covid-19.

But the match has been postponed until 30th of April 2020 and British citizens are asked to isolate themselves at home. The postponement of the competition sparked debate between finishing the season or ending the season with a number of options available.

The match can continue without spectators and be played in a short span of time. Whatever it is, according to football finance expert Doctor Rob Wilson, the Premier League must be resolved because clubs can experience a crisis if the season is stopped.

“Failing to finish this season will leave the club at the stage of crisis,” Doctor Wilson told PA.

“The club will be faced with questions such as ‘Can players get paid, do they have to be overdone, do we have to finish contracts early’.”

“So the intention is to finish the season, even if it’s a lot, much later on.”

“You can imagine the Premier League generating nearly one billion euros less television revenue this year, as a consequence of games not being played, because of that pressure to finish the season,” said Doctor Wilson.

Losing income of up to one billion euros will create a crisis among Premier League clubs. Doctor Wilson added that if clubs are also starting to fret about the corona virus situation, because they do not have long-term plans from the financial side.

“Football clubs didn’t tend to plan long-term financially, which is why they are a little worried now. You will see Premier League clubs becoming more and more depressed as they progress, because they do not expect a decline and they should think about it,” added Doctor Wilson.

“Too many clubs are leading from hand to mouth (thinking for now). As soon as you see a problem, they suddenly fight over because they don’t have any money coming in.”

“They must always plan for possibilities, not necessarily a global health pandemic, but certainly a setback in trade.”

“If you take the remaining television money from the formula, then the Premier League club will fight in exactly the same way as the League One and League Two clubs,” he concluded.

One plan in mind for this season is to play a World Cup-style match: finish it for a month. Plus the game is played without spectators and the teams stay temporarily at the local hotel.
