Regulations for Determining the Top Three of the 2020 European Cup Standings

By db-admin – Euro 2020 has entered the final group stage. Several countries have already secured tickets to the knockout stages of the European Cup, the two countries that have confirmed their place in the order of one-two have definitely qualified for the next phase.

Even so, the teams that still have the opportunity to be in third place should not be discouraged, because there is still a chance for them to qualify for the knockout phase and in the 2020 European Cup tournament to reach the last 16.

As well as the example from the group A stage which has ended. Italy sealed the top spot in the group with nine points from three games, scoring seven goals without conceding.

Italy won the last match against Wales with a score of 1-0 through Matteo Pessina’s goal at the Stadio Olimpico, Sunday (20/06) night WIB. Wales, despite losing, is second in the standings and ahead on goal difference from Switzerland who have the same points (four points).

Switzerland in their last match won 3-1 over Turkey through two goals from Xherdan Shaqiri and one goal from Haris Seferovic. Turkey certainly did not qualify because they did not get a single point and Switzerland was in third place.

Switzerland did not get a direct ticket to the last 16, but they should not be discouraged because there is still a chance to enter the top three and qualify for the last 16.

“I’m very happy. We showed as a team what we can be. The team did what they needed. I felt we put in a good performance for 90 minutes. Our target remains to qualify for the last 16. Now we have to wait and see.” Swiss coach, Vladimir Petkovic.

Not many know how the third-placed team in the European Cup group stage can qualify for the knockout phase. In fact this rule has been in place for a long time and just for information, Portugal qualified for the knockout stages of the European Cup with the best third place in the group and ultimately won the tournament in 2016.

Determining the Best Three Rank Team

Four of the six teams selected as the best third place will qualify for the big 16 of the 2020 European Cup. So how do you determine four of the six teams?

According to regulation article 21.03 the results of the best three rankings are taken from their performance in three group matches with the following criteria:

A. The highest points earned.

B. The goal difference is superior.

C. Higher number of goals.

D. Higher number of wins.

E. Discipline points that are better than the consideration of yellow and red cards received (three-point red card, one-point yellow card, three-point card accumulation).

F. Overall position in the European Cup Qualifiers rankings.

Currently, until the group A match ends, Switzerland is in the top three best rankings, followed by Portugal, Austria, Finland, then Spain and Croatia.
