Roberto Carlos Story with Real Madrid
By db-admin
DBasia.news – Long before Real Madrid had Marcelo, who patented the club’s left back position which was once strengthened by another Brazilian legend, Roberto Carlos. Carlos defended the team from 1996 to 2007.
Real Madrid took Carlos in 1996 after a season without success at Inter Milan. Lorenzo Sanz, the former President of Real Madrid who recently died of a large corona virus took him to the Santiago Bernabeu.
“He was the one who brought me to the club. Only Lorenzo’s memory made me smile. Even though he was president, he was above all a fan. He lived for Real Madrid. He was always very involved, always with us in the dressing room,” explained Roberto Carlos in the US.
“When we draw or lose, he will let us have it. But when we win the title, he will be the first to embrace us. We love him for his human qualities, for his optimism, for everything he does for Madrid.”
“He is like a father to us. I deal with him every day. He will always give me advice. I can never call him Lorenzo Sanz, even if I try! For me he is always President or President.”
Many memories or stories of the 584 appearances and 71 goals for Madrid, including one when they won La Septima or the seventh Champions League title in the 1997-98 season.
Last night before the final against Juventus in Amsterdam, Netherlands, Carlos told the Real Madrid players not to be fast but to stay up until four in the morning in the hotel lobby.
“We struggled at LaLiga that season. Juve were in the final for three years in a row. We did not enter the match as a favorite,” said Roberto Carlos.
“The night before the finals nobody could sleep. Normally we would go to bed at 10 pm, but that night we sat in the hotel lobby until four in the morning, telling each other stories. We are not afraid, we really respect Juventus.”
The match started and Real Madrid successfully won the seventh Champions League title from a single goal from the Serbian striker, Predrag Mijatovic in the 66th minute.
“We competed very well in the final. Juve had many chances, but we won 1-0. We won the match not only with our quality, but with our motivation. We wanted it more than they did.”
11 seasons played with Real Madrid and Carlos played his last match in June 2007 against Mallorca.
“My last match for the club was on 17 June 2007. We faced Mallorca at the Bernabeu in the last match of the season – and we are tied points with Barcelona, who play against Gimnastic,” added Carlos.
“If we both win, we know we will win the title based on our head-to-head record against Barca. We went down 1-0 at the start, but in the second half we turned things around and won 3-1. It was an extraordinary victory ,” he explained.
