Shearer-Sutton Duet Became King of the 1994-95 Premier League

DBasia.news – Premier League is called the world’s best league because it creates a lot of dramatic moments from both the bottom-tier to the top-tier. Results of the the matches were difficult to guess, as well as the Premier League champions were also often shocking.

Long before Leicester City directed Claudio Ranieri carved the history of the Cinderella story in the 2015-16 season, there were Blackburn Rovers made by Kenny Dalglish – Liverpool legend and icon – in the 1994-95 season.

Three years after the Premier League was introduced after previously still using the Division One format, Blackburn unexpectedly shocked the public in England and Europe with their success in winning the Premier League title.

In the history of the establishment of the club bearing the rose since 1875 (145 years ago), Rovers won only three times the Division One or Premier League. And the third title was won in 1995 after 81 years.

Liverpool, Newcastle United and Trelleborg removed Blackburn from the League Cup, FA Cup and UEFA Cup (Champions League). But Blackburn felt a blessing from it so they could focus on playing in the Premier League.

With a 100 percent focus on the league, Dalglish made good use of the quality of his squad from players such as: Tim Sherwood, Graeme Le Saux, Henning Berg, Shay Given, Alan Shearer, and Chris Sutton.

The last two names were the main actors behind Rovers’ success in winning the Premier League. The goals and cooperation both become the real scourge of the opponent’s defense.

Judging from Squawka’s data, Shearer played 42 times with a record of 34 goals and 13 assists, while Sutton played 40 matches with a score of 15 goals and 10 assists – a total of 49 goals between the two from a total of 80 Blackburn goals in 42 matches.

The tight battle for the Premier League title continued into the last week. Manchester United’s 1-1 draw against West Ham United gave Rovers the Premier League title, even though they lost 1-2 to Liverpool.

Rovers won 89 points, followed by Man United with 88 points and Nottingham Forest (77 points), Liverpool (74 points) and Leeds United (73 points). Until now the SAS Shearer-Sutton duel is still one of the best front-line duets in the history of English football.

“Sutty (Sutton), I don’t know if you remember, but I miss all our preseason (ahead of the season when they won). Then we played away to Southampton in our first match and we (Shearer-Sutton) immediately matched,” recalled Alan Shearer who is now a football pandit.

“Then in the next match, Leicester were at home, we both scored. We matched the system. It worked,” he added.
