After the Euro 2008, Germany national team were looking for the tough goalkeeper. At that time, the era of Jens Lehmann and Oliver Kahn has over.
No wonder, Jens Lehmann was in his late 30s and decided to retire from Germany national team. Coach Joachim Low decided to find the new goalkeeper for the 2010 World Cup.
Robert Enke was the option of Jens Lehmann in Euro 2008 and upgraded. Enke was the main option of Germany national team at that time.
Experienced in Barcelona and other clubs was the reason why Joachim Low chose Robert Enke. The former Hannover 96 goalkeeper could perform well.
Robert Enke got injured and substituted by Rene Adler. But, Enke was still the main choice of Joachim Low in Germany national team.
When Germany national team entered the final phase ahead of the 2010 World Cup, they heard shocking news. Robert Enke passed away.
Robert Enke’s body was found in the railway around Eilvese. Apparently, the police found his suicidal message near the location.
According to his wife, Teresa, her husband has been dealing with depression for the past years. Their child’s death in 2006 added more pressure on him.
Hannover 96 home as the last club of Robert Enke got many visits from the fans. They brought the flowers, candles, and condolences.
Barcelona expressed their honor by having the moment of silence before the match, as well as in Bundesliga and many other competitions.
The Germany national team canceled the friendly match against Chile. “We are all shocked, we are speechless,” said Germany national team manager at that time, Olivier Bierhoff.
AWD Arena Stadium was the funeral home for Robert Enka. His former teammates in Hannover 96 brought his body to the grave.
Robert Enke’s death made Rene Adler filled the main goalkeeper position of Germany national team. Unfortunately, he got injured and Manuel Neuer took over the position.
His career boosted after the 2010 World Cup. One decade after Robert Enke’s death, Neuer is the captain of Germany national team and won the 2014 World Cup.
Meanwhile, Robert Enke is now resting in peace. He met his daughter and forgot all the depressions.
