The sportsmanship between Lionel Messi and Iker Casillas

DBasia.news – Real Madrid legend, Iker Casillas officially ended his career after 21 years as a professional footballer. Casillas has now returned to Madrid to work as an advisor to the President of Madrid, Florentino Perez.

Throughout his career, the Madrid academy product played in the first team from 1999-2015, moved to Porto and played there until 2020. His heart disease was also the reason for Casillas to retire.

“Real Madrid CF would like to convey their high appreciation and praise to one of the great legends of us and world football,” Real Madrid wrote a statement on their official website.

“The best goalkeeper in the history of Real Madrid and Spanish football came to our home when he was nine years old. Here, our relationship was tied for 25 years and he will forever be remembered as one of our most iconic captains.”

“Iker Casillas has received great love from Real Madrid and is the benchmark for the club’s values.”

“Today, one of the most important players in our 118 year history, a player we love and admire, a goalkeeper who has become a legend with Real Madrid for his work and exemplary attitude on and off the pitch, has said goodbye as a professional player.”

Various remarks as a form of appreciation were given by world football figures, including from Barcelona superstar, Lionel Messi who has been his rival for years on the field.

Even though the rivals on the field both respect each other. Casillas had said this in 2015 when he left Madrid.

“The best striker I have played against? Is Messi. I meet him often and there is no doubt about that,” explained Iker Casillas in 2015.

Five years later Messi stated the same respect for the man who was once nicknamed Saint Iker.

“Iker retired today, but his status as a football legend existed many years ago, not only because he is one of the best LaLiga players, but also because he has won everything at international level,” Messi said in the US.

“You are a fantastic goalkeeper and truly a formidable opponent, I must say. Looking back, I think there is a special rivalry that pushes us to reach new levels every time we meet,” he explained.
