The two main candidates for Arsenal’s Sports Director Are Undone Coming to North London

Marc Overmars

DBasia.news –  Arsenal are still looking for a replacement for Sven Mislintat to fill the position of Director of Sports. The situation was increasingly difficult for them because the two main candidates, Marc Overmars and Monchi, rejected proposals from Arsenal.

Monchi, who left AS Roma some time ago, chose to return to Sevilla. The Andalusian club had a special place in Monchi’s heart because he had been a club goalkeeper in the mid-1988-1999 (counted from Sevilla B).

It didn’t stop there, Monchi also served as Sevilla Sports Director for 17 years from 2000 to 2017.

In that period,   Monchi helping Sevilla win 11 trophies when they found low-priced talented players like Dani Alves, Adriano, Julio Baptista, Seydou Keita, and Ivan Rakitic.

Monchi then left Sevilla and traveled to Rome. Although only two years there, Monchi inherited talented young players in the latest squad such as Justin Kluivert, Cengiz Under, Nicolo Zaniolo, and Patrick Schick.

Arsenal rated it as the right candidate for having the same vision: buying talented players at low prices and having great potential for sale at high prices. But Arsenal’s desire was ‘unrequited’.

“I thank Arsenal, they were the most serious parties showing interest in me. However, in the end, I had to evaluate all available offers to choose which one was most suitable for me,” Monchi said, quoted from Mirror.

“I have quite a number of offers, but I chose Sevilla because of the vision of their sport that is the same as what I want.”

Even so with Overmars. His status as an Arsenal legend in mid-1997-2000 did not make his comeback to North London is easy.

Overmars chose to continue his work as Director of Sports for Ajax Amsterdam. Ajax gave a new contract received by Overmars after seven years working there.

“There are still many challenges here (Ajax) and I enjoy my time. We are experiencing rapid development, both with the junior and senior teams, and I think we still have many things to prove,” Overmars said.

“But most importantly, I am very happy working with people around me now, I get satisfaction from that,” he continued.

What is the next step for Arsenal after being rejected by Monchi and Overmars? Reportedly, Edu was also the target of Unai Emery’s team. Edu, who is now the Brazilian national team coordinator, has played for Arsenal in the period 2001-2005.
